Coach Charlie Sharbel
Coach Charlie Sharbel is an avid runner in the Birmingham community. He spent two years working full-time with the Trak Shak, a beloved local running shop, and is an assistant coach for Vestavia Hills High School's cross-country and track teams, working primarily with distance runners.
He began his running career at the age of 12, when he joined his middle school's cross-country team, quickly becoming a top athlete in a slew of events, from the 5k down to the 4 x 400m relay. He continued running until his junior year of high school, when he decided to take a hiatus from the sport. Although Charlie was talented as a young athlete, he wrestled with the work ethic and mentality required to compete at a high level, leading him to quit the sport as a whole. It wasn't until 2022 that he fell in love with the sport. Though the shoes felt familiar, his perspective on running was entirely new.
Free from the pressures and distractions of adolescence, Coach Charlie found in adulthood that he did, in fact, love the sport. It's this experience with running that motivates Charlie to coach youth: focusing not only on physical development, but also on mental fortitude. In short, Coach Charlie not only teaches how to run well, but how to love running.
Personal Records:
• 5k - 15:53
• 10k - 34:03
• Half Marathon - 1:14:59
• Marathon - 2:40:30
